Our executive coaching philosophy

We use strength-based coaching as the core of our executive coaching business. The GROW coaching model (goals, reality, options, whats next) developed by Graham Alexander is a long established coaching model that works.

It has some parallels with the advice process that advice professionals will recognise. There’s a discovery phase, developing options/strategy alternatives, identifying the most appropriate option and obstacles/risks to achieve it, developing an action plan, milestones and ongoing check-ins.

Our executive coaching process for financial advisers

We begin your coaching journey by scientifically measuring your personality using Dr Robert Hogan’s seven key personality scales. Your coach will guide you through your strengths and struggles.

We like how the Hogan system uses scales (high to low) –  you are not put in a box as a ‘personality type’. Such labelling  actually constrains your thinking about your potential rather than opening up your mind to possibilities.

You will come to understand situations when you are operating at your best using your strengths, and why sometimes you struggle and you’re not quite sure why. Your values and drivers provide important context, so we’ll have a look at those too.

Then comes the really fun bit where you get to work through your goals and dreams and what matters to you!

You will have experienced dealing with clients who have little idea of their goals. Imagine developing your own goals with a coach who is skilled at asking questions, with the context of your values and personality strengths, in a safe space? Coaches call that the coaching crucible, and its where the magic happens!

The GROW executive coaching model

In the mid to late 1980s, Alan Fine, Graham Alexander, and Sir John Whitmore developed the GROW coaching model. It remains one of the most recognised and influential coaching models in the world. It is accredited by the International Coaching Federation for approved progams.

The model came about after Alan Fine, a professional tennis coach, realised the most significant performance challenge for athletes was not that they did not know what to do, but instead that they did not do what they knew they should do. This led to the realisation that performance breakthroughs come from the inside. Whether your an athlete or a financial adviser (and some are both!), however technically skilled you may be (at tennis serving or advice strategies), it’s the mental strength that matters most.
